Clarity – Understanding the purity of a diamond and how it affects its appearance
Clarity – or clarity – describes how free a diamond is from internal and external inclusions. While clarity affects price and rarity, in many cases it is small differences that determine whether a diamond is perceived as “clean” or not. Here you will find out exactly what clarity means, how it is graded and what you should consider – regardless of whether you choose a natural or lab-grown diamond.
What does clarity mean?
Clarity refers to the presence of inclusions (inside the stone) and surface defects (on the surface). These are natural results of the diamond's formation – whether created in the Earth's interior or in a laboratory.
- Small crystals or mineral particles
- Thin cracks (feathers)
- Needles or clouds
- Superficial marks from polishing
The fewer and smaller the inclusions, the higher the clarity – and in some cases, the higher the price.
Clarity scale (GIA & IGI)

| FL (Flawless) | No visible internal or external defects at 10x magnification |
| IF (Internally Flawless) | No inclusions, only external marks |
| HVAC1 / HVAC2 | Very, very small inclusions – extremely difficult to see |
| VS1 / VS2 | Very small inclusions – often invisible to the eye |
| SI1 / SI2 | Small inclusions – sometimes visible without magnification |
| I1 / I2 / I3 | Obvious inclusions – affect appearance and durability (not offered by us) |

What does “eye clean” mean?
An “eye clean” diamond has no visible inclusions with the naked eye from straight on.
This always applies to:
- FL – IF – VVS1 – VVS2
- VS1
Often also applies to:
- VS2 – especially under 1.0 ct
- SI1 – depending on type and location

Clarity in natural vs. lab-grown diamonds
- Natural diamonds: May have small crystals, cracks or mineral residues
- Lab-grown diamonds: Often have growth lines or metal particles from the process
