Oval Cut Diamond – A brilliant shape with a magnifying effect
Oval cut diamonds combine the brilliance of a round brilliant with an elegant, oblong shape that elongates the impression and makes the stone appear larger than its actual carat weight. An oval cut diamond is both timeless and modern – perfect for those looking for something classic but with a personal twist.
History and origins
The oval diamond cut was introduced in the 1860s by legendary diamond cutter Lazare Kaplan. His innovation built on the optics of the brilliant cut, but in a more elongated silhouette. The result was a shape that retains the sparkle of the round brilliant – but with a unique and elegant expression.
Today, cutting is optimized using 3D analysis, where rough diamonds are digitally scanned to maximize light rendering, minimize material waste and avoid visual imperfections such as the so-called “bow-tie effect.”
Advantages of oval cut diamonds
- Larger visual surface area than a round brilliant of the same carat.
- Elegant and graceful shape that visually lengthens the finger.
- Versatile – fits in solitaire, halo and three-stone settings.
- Affordable – more of the rough stone is preserved, which reduces the price per carat.

What to consider when choosing an oval diamond
Color: Ovals often show color at the tips. For white metal, D–H is recommended, for yellow gold also I–J .
Clarity: Choose SI1–VS1 . Oval cuts mask inclusions relatively well, but always check the 360° view for larger carats.
Cut: GIA/IGI does not grade “cut” for ovals. Focus on symmetry, polish, and ratio. Read more about cut quality .
