Pear-cut diamond – Elegance with drama

Pear-cut diamonds – also known as pear-cut diamonds – combine the sparkle of round brilliance with the elegance of an elongated shape. With a pointed end and a softly rounded side, this shape creates a teardrop-like silhouette that visually lengthens the finger and gives a distinct, romantic expression.

History and characteristics

The pear cut was invented by Belgian master cutter Lodewyk van Berquem in the 15th century. By combining the round brilliant cut with the length of the marquise shape, he created a unique symmetrical shape that both sparkles and lengthens.

Today, advanced 3D analysis is used to create a perfect balance in the cut and avoid the so-called bow-tie effect, a dark shadow area that can be visible in the middle of the stone if the proportions are not optimal.

Benefits of pear grinding

  • Lengthening effect – the teardrop-shaped silhouette makes fingers look slimmer and longer.
  • Greater visual size – the point gives the illusion of a larger stone than round diamonds of the same carat.
  • Versatility – popular in both solitaire rings and in pendants and earrings.
  • Drama and softness – the combination of lace and rounded sides creates visual movement and elegance.

Proportions and ratios for pear-cut diamonds

Quality Table % Depth % Ratio (length/width)
Excellent / Ideal 53–63% 58–63% 1.45–1.55
Very Good 52–65% 56–65% 1.40–1.60
Acceptable 50–67% 54–67% 1.35–1.65

Tip: A length to width ratio of around 1.50 is considered the most visually balanced. Always use 360° viewing to identify any bow-tie effect and to ensure symmetry.

Color: The tip may show more color – for white metal D–H is recommended, while I–J is suitable for yellow gold.

Clarity: The tip is sensitive – choose at least VS2 . For stones over 1.00 ct, VS1 or VVS is often a better choice.

Cut: No official cut grade – assess polish, symmetry and proportions. The point should be centered and the rounded base smooth. Always use 360° viewing for assessment.

Common settings for pear-cut diamonds

  • Solitaire – highlights the elegant silhouette.
  • Halo – enhances size and protects the tip.
  • Side stones / three-stone ring – balances the elongated shape with brilliance from smaller stones.
