Fluorescence in Diamonds – What it Means and How It Affects Appearance
Fluorescence is a topic that often raises questions – and rightly so. It is a property that some diamonds have, but which is not always visible or noticeable in normal light. At Diamant Banken, we believe that the most important thing is how the diamond is experienced in reality – that is why we show all our stones in 360° video with high resolution, so that you can see the appearance of the stone for yourself before you decide.
What is fluorescence?
Fluorescence is the reaction of a diamond to UV light. When a diamond with fluorescence is illuminated with ultraviolet light, such as from sunlight or special lamps, it may exhibit a bluish glow – or in more unusual cases, tones of yellow, green or red. It is a completely natural effect that occurs depending on how the diamond's atoms are structured.
Approximately 35% of all diamonds exhibit some degree of fluorescence. In approximately 95% of these cases, the glow is blue.
The grading is stated in the certificate , for example as “Faint Blue” or “Very Strong Blue”, but it is important to understand that fluorescence is not a quality assessment – it is a descriptive observation.
Degrees of fluorescence
| Rating | Description |
|---|---|
| None | No fluorescence |
| Faint | Faint, barely visible |
| Medium | Moderate fluorescence in UV light |
| Strong | Clear fluorescence in UV light |
| Very Strong | Intense blue glow under UV light |
How does it affect the appearance of the diamond?
In most cases: not at all. GIA – one of the world's leading diamond grading institutes – has shown in major studies that there is no consistent relationship between fluorescence and how a diamond is perceived in daylight .
Only in rare cases have diamonds with very strong fluorescence been perceived as milky or less clear – and this is often due to more factors than just fluorescence.
However, moderate to strong blue fluorescence in diamonds with lower color grades (e.g. I–K) can make the stone appear visually whiter, as the blue glow neutralizes warmer tones. This may be an advantage for some customers.
Does fluorescence affect the price?
- Color grading D–F: Stones with fluorescence can sometimes have a lower price compared to equivalent stones without fluorescence.
- Color grading G–K: Fluorescence, on the contrary, can be perceived as beneficial and sometimes result in higher demand – especially if the blue tone contributes to a more colorless visual experience.
Our view of fluorescence
At Diamant Banken, we believe that every diamond should be judged based on how it is experienced in real life – not just based on the technical specifications in the certificate. That's why we show each stone with 360° video in high resolution and full transparency in color, clarity, cut and any fluorescence.
The most important thing is what you see – not what a single parameter says. Feeling unsure? Our knowledgeable staff is always available via the chat at the bottom right or through personal advice to help you choose the right stone.
